There are important strategies that students and all of us can use before, during and after reading:
Before Reading
· Talk about the
title of the book and what it could be about.
· Set a purpose for
reading: Example: “I am going to read this book to learn
more about cats.”
· Take a ‘picture walk’
through the book. What do the pictures tell us?
During Reading
Visualize – make a movie in your head about what you are reading.
Question – try to answer the who, what, when, where, why and how
questions as you read along.
Clarify – understand new words
*Use finger to point to each word while you read
(for beginners).
*Use beginning letter sounds to figure out words.
*Use pictures on the page to figure out words.
*Use word chunks to help figure out words (groups
of letters in a
pattern like _ack, _oat).
*Look for smaller words within the larger word.
* Read to the end of the sentence. Sometimes the
word just makes
Sense and pops out.
*Reread the sentence or phrase to help with
understanding.
Make predictions – “What will happen next?”
Make connections
*What other books are like this book?
*Do you ever feel like this character?
*Does this story make you think about something else in
the world?
After Reading
· What did you think
about this story and how did it make you feel?
· Summarize:
*What was most important in the story?
* What was the problem in the story?
*Was the problem solved?
*How did the story end?
